Round Rock Youth Baseball

Baseball is huge in Central Texas and for a good reason. Round Rock has produced some serious talent, including the likes of several local legends playing in the big leagues. Round Rock is also home to our good friends at the Dell Diamond, the Round Rock Express. At RockSports we take a small part in the action by providing custom baseball jerseys and by adding names and numbers to jerseys and hats.

We are starting to get several teams coming in to add on names and numbers. I thought it would be good to show an example and give pricing here in case your team needs to customize its jerseys.

We have waited a while and it is finally done - RockSports is an approved vendor for Leander ISD!

Based on the feedback from our customers, last year RockSports opened a second location in the Cedar Park area. Take this story as an example:
A few weeks ago I was having a really bad day. The night before, I stayed up late grading papers and studying for a midterm for my graduate school classes. Sleep deprived, driving to school after a late start, a squirrel jumped out right in front of my car. Everyone knows I have a fondness for squirrels, so I pulled a Danica Patrick and swerved out of the way in the nick of time. Unfortunately, the hot coffee, that I spent my lunch money on, sprayed all over my car and on me. It would have been really awesome if there was a super slow motion, HD, camera mounted to the inside of my car that could have caught my face contorting as hot liquid magma coffee poured all over my white pants and “Hold me I’m a fermata t-shirt”. But there wasn’t and no one was really able to enjoy the moment, which is sad.

So, being that I am running late, I continued on to school with the plan to tell any nosey students that the stain on my pants was just a floral grunge pattern that they were not sophisticated enough to appreciate. Driving up the parking lot was completely full. I finally find a place at the bottom of the huge hill about two miles away (a little exaggeration). So I looked for a Sherpa to help me with my bags, but I couldn’t find one and I resolved to make it on my own. I walked to the back entrance where the band hall is located, rushing to get to my first period before the class starts, because the parking lot was completely full. To my chagrin the door is locked. Less than thrilled I walked around to the front of the school where the whole community was lined up in front of the school. At this point I am wondering what the world is going on. I looked to the front of the school and it said, “Saturday Town Election – Don’t forget to vote”. Just then, realizing that it was Saturday and that I didn’t need to be at school, a strange man came up and gave me a hug. I froze. I didn’t know what to say or do. He looked down smiled at me and said I read your shirt “Hold me I’m a fermata” and you looked like you needed a hug. I screamed, everyone looked at me, I ran down the hill, jumped in the car, sped home, got some ice cream, and jumped in my bed. I needed to start all over.

P.E. - two letters that can evoke so much fear, passion, excitement. For many, images of rope climbing, sit-ups, and dressing out in to smelly uniforms are brought to mind. For me, it was my favorite subject. I couldn't wait for PE to roll around so that I could show off my soccer skills or play indoor hockey. It was a chance to free my mind of the math homework that was due next period. I guess PE (Physical Education) is one of those things you either love or hate.

As an adult I am seeing Physical Education become a popular topic of debate among parents, teachers, and the media. Whether it is Shaq fighting against childhood obesity, or educators crying for higher academic standards in the core subjects, it is clear that the student's time is desired. I tend to fall into Shaq's corner. One because he's a big dude and I would not want to tangle with a 7'.2" "Big Aristotle". The real reason that I side with the importance of Physical Education in the schools is that I believe that it provides a balanced life. Time in school should reflect a balance between mental, social, emotional, economical, and spiritual aspects of life. Some educators would make the argument that time out side of school should be used for physical activity. To this I would not disagree, just as that time outside of school should be used for mental exercise.

The truth is, that the responsibility, of a balanced life and higher test scores, is ultimately on the shoulders of the parent and the individual student. As teachers we do our best to make an impression on our students; to give them a learning experience that will act as buoy in future trials.

We recently got back from the Texas Girls Coaches Association Conference and talked with some of our loyal customers. One of the Coaches said that she loved this shirt. In fact, she bought two of them and said that she would wear one on the first day of school to set the tone for the year. The other she was going to use as a sign in the locker room. That way every time they come to the gym, they know that it is time to release all their worries and focus on their sport.

I'm sure as a coach you get tired of answering the question of whether or not you will dress out. That's like saying to a math teacher - Are we going to add and subtract today. Of course you will, unless you want to run in heals!

Embroidery vs. Screen Printing

When ordering small quantities is it better to go with screen printing, digital printing, or embroidery?

This is a questions that we often come across for new customers, especially when they are ordering for their business. The answer is - it all depends.

Screen Printing is not always cheaper than embroidery.

Example of when embroidery is the cheaper option
- When there is a low quantity and their are several colors in the design.

Let's say 5,000 stitches (which means it is a fairly simple design).
20 sports shirts with four colors in your logo.

Screen printing price - Around $17.50 per sports shirt.
Embroidery price (set-up fee included) - $15.50 per sports shirt.

- When you want to personalize a garment.

Let's say you want to put your name on your shirt.

Screen printing price - minimum of 12 per name - around $2.00 per print.
Embroidery price (set-up fee included) - $7.50.

When price is not the only determining factor, here are a few qualifiers that will help direct you toward the best decorated apparel option:

1. What color garments will you be using?
If it is any color other than white, then you can eliminate digital printing.

2. How many apparel products will you be ordering?
If it is less than 12 than you can eliminate screen printing.

3. What apparel products do you want your logo on?
RockSports does not screen print on hats. If you want to get caps, you're better off going with embroidery.

4. The all too obvious - Which do you prefer?

Simple Recommendations:
For casual garments, such as: t-shirts, shorts, long sleeve t-shirts, and hoodies, I would recommend screen printing.

For corporate apparel, such as caps, sports shirts / polo's, woven's & oxfords, I would recommend embroidery. Also, for personalized gifts, such as baby clothes, blankets, towels and pillows.

For gifts, such as: birthday shirts, baby onesies, I would recommend digital printing (sometimes embroidery for onesies).

Embroidery Pros:

Embroidery looks professional.
The price for embroidery is not effected by the number of colors in your logo.
Once your logo is digitized there are no set-up charges and no minimum orders.
Embroidery is often perceived as more formal.

Embroidery Cons:

There is a one time set-up fee for digitizing your logo, which is a minimum of $35.
Embroidered thread will never look as detailed as a screen printed design.
Background fills and large, detailed artwork require large stitch counts, which means a higher price.

Screen Printing Pros:

Most of the time it is cheaper for large quantities.
The artwork will be a higher resolution and higher quality than embroidery.

Screen Printing Cons:

Minimum of 12 garments is required.
Colorful artwork requires more resources and will be more expensive.

Digital Printing Pros:

No minimum orders
No price change with the number of colors in the design.
Turn around times are quicker than screen printing or embroidery.

Digital Printing Cons:

Print colors are not as vibrant as screen printing
There are only a few colors that you can print on and get quality color match (White shirts are the best).
Dark shirts are not an option
